Joel D. Thompson, MD
Joel Thompson, M.D., is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with more than 15 years of experience in caring for thousands of your neighbors right here in Southern Arizona.
He received his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1996, completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Arizona in 2001, and completed a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery in 2002 at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Dr. Thompson has conducted presentations on issues from advanced surgical techniques in complex clinical cases in shoulder reconstruction to orthopaedic injuries in cycling. He has also authored clinical articles in national peer-reviewed medical journals, including Clinical Orthopaedics and the Journal of Hand Surgery. He has taught other Orthopaedic surgeons throughout the western United States the intricacies of primary, reverse, and revision shoulder arthroplasty.
He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. He is also a member of the Arizona Medical Association, Arizona Orthopaedic Society, and Pima County Medical Society. He is also an avid cyclist and helps support El Grupo Youth Cycling and the Tucson Bicycle Classic.
